Red currant
  (red berries)
(Ribes rubrum)
One of the 'classic' berries. Ripens from mid June to early September (depending on the variety)

Red berries from 0,5 cm to 1,2 cm. Berries grow in small bundles or grapes with only a few to plenty berries in one grape.

They have good, somewhat tart taste.

Good winterhardy bush that reaches up to 1,5 meter after a few years. Also very suited to grow as a hedge (cordon) up to 2 meter high.

Prefers a place in half-shade, full sun is tolerated.

Prefers a soil with a good open structure. (a mulch cover is apprecitaed bu the plants)

Fruits very soon after planting.

Fruiting depends on the wheather (cold and rain), but is rarely a problem..

Flowers early (april) but is very cold tolerant. Flowers appear in small bunshes (future grape) with yellow-green flowers.Pollination is mainly done by bumble bees and solitary bees (by occasion also by honeybees).

Care: remove crossing branches to keep the bush open. Add yearlu some compost and keep the soil mulched (wood clippings,...).

Be aware that also the birds appreciate these berries very well....
